Everything [in] Between: power & humility | Maundy Thursday Worship | April 17, 2025
The word Maundy comes from the Latin Mandatum, meaning “Commandment”—
in particular, Jesus’ command: “Love one another.”
But what kind of love does Jesus model? Not a love that stays comfortable. Not a love that keeps score. It is a love that kneels. A love that shares bread even with those who would betray.
A love that redefines power through humility.
Everyone who answered Jesus’ call to follow him found their lives upended. They left behind their livelihoods and leaned into a way of thinking that centered the poor and the powerless.
And on this night—his final meal with his closest friends—Jesus upended their world again.
He invited them into a liminal space: between teaching and trial, between life and death, between the known and the terrifying unknown. Tonight, we join them there.
We linger in that space—between presence and absence, strength and surrender.
We’ll break bread. We’ll sing. We’ll read between the lines of scripture and imagine the world through the eyes of those on the margins. We’ll listen. And if nothing else, we’ll sit with the in-between. This night is not about perfection. It’s about presence.
So, welcome, friends. You belong at this table.
